In a significant development in the cryptocurrency industry, Changpeng Zhao, widely known as "CZ," has stepped down as the CEO of Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. This decision followed several allegations against him and his company throughout the years. Let's look at who exactly CZ is and what could have driven a man of his caliber to give up his status.

Background

Changpeng Zhao was born in the Jiangsu province of China, but his family eventually migrated to Vancouver, Canada. His parents were both teachers, and CZ would spend his early years working part-time jobs at places like McDonald's to help support their household expenses.

After graduating from McGill University, where he received a computer science degree, he developed computer software for several finance companies, such as the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Bloomberg Tradebook, and even his own startup Fusion Systems.

CZ would then also take an interest in cryptocurrencies with him, contributing to the development of Blockchain.info and OKCoin. It is said that when he first heard about Bitcoin, he sold his apartment in Shanghai and went "all in" by investing all his money in it, thus showing his conviction. This dedication and belief in the crypto scene, coupled with his genius and experience with developing software, would culminate in his developing Binance.

Accomplishments

Following CZ's launching of Binance in 2017, accomplishment after accomplishment would find its way into his life. He raised $15 million with its initial coin offering, and Binance quickly became the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange within less than a year. CZ also became a multi-billionaire with an estimated net worth of around $10-20 billion. Following his exchange's success, he also launched Binance Coin (BNB), which currently sits in the Top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization as of 2023, and BNB Smart Chain, a robust blockchain network.

Binance would then expand their operations and reach 100+ countries, including the Philippines and the United States. Unfortunately, CZ and Binance's ambitions would eventually be met by harsh opposition.

Controversies (Binance in the United States)

Throughout CZ's career with Binance, many criticisms and allegations would be thrown against him, such as a lack of transparency with their funds, misappropriation of their client's assets, listing questionable tokens, responding slowly to hacks, and even market manipulation. What caused a crack in CZ's seemingly infallible armor would be the regulators, specifically, the U.S. government.

Although Binance already had a separate arm in America through the highly regulated Binance.US, several regulators such as the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have claimed that Binance.com, their global brand, has continued to offer services to Americans despite not being allowed to do so. Though claiming to have left the United States, Binance allegedly kept a small number of "VIP", high-value clients from America whom the exchange would assist in hiding their identity and location.

U.S. regulators have then sued Binance for several cases, such as for not placing anti-money laundering (AML) controls, operating as an unlicensed money transmitter business (MSB), and violating sanctions law by allowing blacklisted entities to transact on their platform.

Stepping Down

On November 21, 2023, Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to money laundering-related violations and agreed to step down as the CEO of Binance as part of the deal. He was also personally fined $50 million, and Binance was fined at least $4.3 billion as a settlement for their case. Binance will be allowed to operate, but CZ is prohibited from "any present or future involvement in operating or managing" Binance for three years, and they will be subject to an independent compliance monitor to ensure that they do not repeat the same violations. John Reed Stark, a former chief at the SEC's Office of Internet Enforcement, also stated that he believes "CZ is looking at definite prison time," but this is yet to be determined.

Following CZ's resignation, Richard Teng, a former Abu Dhabi regulator and Binance regional markets head, has been appointed the new CEO. In a tweet from CZ, he stated that Binance would be in good hands and would now take a break from running a business through passive investing and getting back into DeFi. He was also proud to share that in Binance's resolutions with the U.S. agencies; they did not allege that Binance misappropriated any user funds nor that they engaged in any market manipulation.

Bullish and Bearish Case for the Market

As participants in the cryptocurrency market and Web3, this event has many possible implications. Some find the settlement bullish since the regulators will now stop attacking Binance and focus on something else. It could even finally pave the way for the approval of Bitcoin spot ETFs with the U.S. government believing to have removed the "bad actors" from the space with former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried being convicted just weeks before. Others find it bearish since it may elicit a series of crackdowns on different exchanges and the entire cryptocurrency market. There is also some ambiguity on whether or not Binance is as liquid as it professes, so their fine may cause some selling.

CZ's resignation marks the end of an era, not just for Binance but for crypto as a whole. Gone are the days of cryptocurrencies being known as the "Wild West'' of investing. With adoption comes regulation, and with regulation comes the need for compliance lest we suffer the consequences. Nevertheless, no matter what happens to Binance and CZ from here, the crypto market will definitely endure. There will always be setbacks in the Web3 space, but these also represent an opportunity to grow, and learning from these issues helps us evolve our industry as a whole.
