Facebook and Instagram Down? Here's How SocialFi Can Help
Meta apps, Facebook and Instagram, recently faced an outage from unknown causes. This outage occurred approximately around 11:20 pm (GMT +8) on March 5, 2024. The outage that lasted for an hour caused mass hysteria in social media as users flock to X (Formerly Twitter) and TikTok to verify a mass outage. Worries of hacks, data breaches, and malware were the common concerns faced by users of Facebook and Instagram.

Data held on Facebook and Instagram are held on their own servers and databases with Meta being the primary custodian. Without any way to track personal data, users began to grow concerned about their private data possibly being mishandled during the downtime. Downtimes and outages are severe yet inevitable instances that social media apps face that can’t be avoided due to its unpredictable nature.
However, Social media applications that use blockchain and Web3 technology are able to mitigate user concern when apps experience an unexpected outage. As personal data is written in stone in the blockchain, users are able to view, access, and preserve the security of their own data such as tokens, NFTs, and other assets. SocialFi reinforces the transparency of blockchain technology by allowing users to safeguard their information on the dApp.
It is unknown whether the downtime of Facebook and Instagram was due to bad actors or an honest error. However, a possibility of malicious handling of personal information during an app’s outage is a possibility that users are defenseless against. SocialFi technology is able to mitigate risks by allowing users to manage risk and protect their information using blockchain technology.
This is a developing story as of the moment.
