The story of the Internet Computer is not an ordinary one — it’s an extraordinary project, powered by a community of brilliant people, and the vision, mission and technology have unique power.
– Dominic Williams, Founder and Chief Scientist of the DFINITY Foundation
The DFINITY Foundation is the major contributor for the Internet Computer Protocol. Originating from the combination of "decentralized" and "infinity," the name DFINITY embodies the essence of Williams' early blockchain research, dating back to 2015.
As of 2024, traditional blockchain networks playing the role of smart contract platforms can only host small amounts of data and cannot match even a Raspberry Pi computer. The World Computer Mission of ICP, "creating real ‘world computer’ blockchains, which could host humanity’s online systems and services fully on their networks, in revolutionary new ways, as an alternative to traditional IT such as cloud services — essentially reinventing compute," aims to change the status quo.
The Internet Computer is known for its scalability, security, and efficiency as a platform that allow data centers globally to collaborate in a decentralized manner, and runs specialized contracts known as canister smart contracts that enable Web3 services and applications to run solely from the blockchain without the help of traditional information technology (IT).
“Proper education is pivotal in shifting the narrative for Filipinos from mere users to active builders in the Web3 space”, said Nelson Lumbres, co-founder of ICP HUB Philippines. Through initiatives like ICP HUB Philippines and Bitskwela, Internet Computer is dedicated to providing blockchain education to Filipino educators and learners, elevating the adoption of Web3 technologies.
