DICT Puts Roblox “On Notice” Over Child Safety Risks
The Philippine government has issued a formal warning to Roblox, placing the popular gaming platform “on notice” over concerns that it is being used for the grooming and exploitation of minors.
The announcement was made on March 18, 2026 by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), led by DICT Secretary Henry Aguda.
Authorities said the platform can no longer be considered a safe environment if risks to children are not urgently addressed.
Government Demands Stronger Safety Measures
The DICT and CICC called on Roblox to immediately strengthen its child protection systems and cooperate fully with Philippine authorities.
Key demands include:
• implementing stricter safeguards against grooming and exploitation
• improving monitoring and moderation systems
• establishing clearer reporting and response mechanisms
• cooperating with law enforcement on investigations.
Officials emphasized that protecting minors is a priority directive under Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has pushed for stronger online safety enforcement.
Possible Suspension if Issues Persist
Authorities warned that failure to act could lead to restrictions or even a full suspension of Roblox in the Philippines.
“No platform is above the law,” officials said, stressing that companies operating in the country must comply with child protection standards.
As of now, no ban has been implemented, with the government currently in a compliance and warning phase.
Triggered by Rising Safety Concerns
The warning follows multiple reports that Roblox has been used as an entry point for: online grooming and sexual exploitation, exposure of minors to harmful or extremist content, and migration of conversations from in-game chats to private messaging platforms.
The issue gained urgency following a foiled school attack plot in Calabarzon, where minors were allegedly groomed through online gaming environments before being rescued by authorities.
Part of a Broader Global Crackdown
The Philippine move aligns with growing international scrutiny of online platforms and child safety.
Regulators in countries such as Australia and the United States have also raised concerns about Roblox’s safety systems, including cases involving alleged inadequate moderation and exposure to predators.
While Roblox has introduced measures such as parental controls, chat restrictions, and age verification tools, authorities say these may not be sufficient in high-risk scenarios.
Advice to Parents and Guardians
Officials are urging parents to take a more active role in monitoring children’s online activity, including: enabling parental controls, checking in-game and external communications, encouraging open conversations about online experiences, and reporting suspicious behavior to authorities.
The Philippine government’s warning signals a tougher stance on online child safety, particularly for platforms widely used by minors. While Roblox remains accessible, authorities have made clear that failure to strengthen protections could lead to regulatory action, including a potential suspension in the country.
