AI has been in the forefront of Crypto and Blockchain growth in the past few months. Recently in a February 19 post on X, Vitalik noted on how AI can solve Ethereum’s greatest risk which is its smart contract security and assistance in coding. Vitalik has continued to express his excitement for AI and its interaction with blockchain technology in different ways and categories. However, with the different applications of AI with blockchain, Vitalik seeks to have AI one day solve Ethereum’s greatest risk which is its code security.

Vitalik's X post about his thoughts on AI

AI-assisted Smart Contract Building

Vitalik expressed the importance of human built code as human involvement is the most effective way to convey intent. However, dealing with smart contracts entails a challenging aspect for blockchain developers due to its immutability and sensitivity.. Formal verification is a process that tests, evaluates, and reviews code to minimize and mitigate code exploits, vulnerability, and weaknesses. This process of formally verifying code in building Ethereum has been stressed as the biggest technical risk of Ethereum according to Vitalik.

With the assistance of AI in formal verification and bug finding, code written on Ethereum can help assist blockchain developers in making their code more robust and effective. This would help the overall efficiency and performance of Ethereum which would boost the blockchain ecosystem within the EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine).

Advancing Cryptography With AI

As Ethereum’s greatest risk is their code potentially being fallible, AI has been noted as a probable solution in both blockchain security and scalability. However, Vitalik expressed that there are different ways on how AI supports Blockchain applications in a blog post that he published last January 30.

One of the challenges that AI seeks to overcome is a blockchain’s capabilities in cryptology. One specific difficulty with cryptography is that creating something truly safe can only be done through open-source software. However, in artificial intelligence, an open model makes it far more susceptible to hostile machine learning attacks. AI innovation continues to break barriers with its limitations providing blockchain developers a simpler and more effective way to approach the complex task of cryptography.

Vitalik and other leaders in blockchain hope to leverage a promising technology that can not only make their work more robust, but also efficient. Along with blockchain, AI has a long way to go as an emerging technology. Its influence is not limited to generative applications such as ChatGPT and Dall-E, but also in product building and security. This would catapult the blockchain industry and future projects to a more sustainable and trustworthy approach thanks to AI’s involvement in security and quality assurance.
