PNP Foils School Mass Shooting Plot Linked to Popular Online Game
Philippine authorities have prevented a planned school mass shooting in the Calabarzon region after rescuing seven minors who were allegedly groomed online through the gaming platform Roblox.
The rescue operation was carried out on February 2, 2026 by the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) after international intelligence flagged suspicious online activity linked to the plot.
According to police, the minors—aged 7 to 17 years old—were allegedly recruited by foreign online predators who manipulated them into planning a coordinated attack scheduled for February 16, 2026 at a school in the Calabarzon region.
Authorities said the plot was successfully disrupted before any violence occurred.
Online Grooming Began in Roblox Chatrooms
Investigators said the grooming process reportedly started inside Roblox chatrooms, where suspects allegedly lured children into private conversations before moving discussions to external messaging platforms and websites.
Once communication shifted outside the game, the minors were allegedly exposed to increasingly violent material, including videos of shootings, bombings, and extremist imagery.
Police said the suspects used a reward-based system to gradually escalate instructions given to the children.
Authorities reported that the minors were eventually instructed to:
- acquire firearms, including M16A1 rifles
- gather improvised explosive devices (IEDs)
- prepare Molotov cocktails and other weapons
- carry out a coordinated attack on their school.
Investigators also said the children were told to take their own lives after the attack, a tactic commonly associated with online manipulation and extremist radicalization.
Warning Sign Triggered International Alert
The investigation reportedly began after one of the children posted a message online stating “I will burn down my school.”
The post was flagged by foreign law enforcement partners, prompting international coordination that led to a tip being sent to the Philippine authorities.
After monitoring the communications, the PNP-ACG conducted a rescue operation and took the minors into protective custody.
Their electronic devices were seized and are currently undergoing digital forensic examination.
Children Now Under Care of Social Workers
All seven minors were turned over to social workers and are receiving psychological and psychosocial support.
Authorities emphasized that the children are considered victims of online grooming and manipulation, rather than suspects in the crime.
Police said the investigation is continuing to identify the foreign individuals believed to be behind the online recruitment.
Authorities Urge Parents to Become “Digital Guardians”
Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police, called the incident a serious warning about the dangers of online grooming targeting children.
Officials urged parents to monitor their children’s online activities and stay involved in their digital lives.
Law enforcement also warned that online predators may use popular gaming platforms to initiate contact with minors before moving conversations to private channels.
The foiled Calabarzon attack highlights growing concerns about how online communities—including gaming platforms—can be exploited by bad actors to manipulate young users. Authorities say the case underscores the importance of parental oversight, early detection of suspicious online behavior, and stronger digital safety protections for children.
