Roblox Rolls Out “Kids” and “Select” Accounts Amid PH Child Safety Push

Roblox is introducing new age-based account systems and tighter safety controls following direct engagement with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC). The move comes after heightened scrutiny in the Philippines over risks faced by minors online, including exposure to inappropriate content and harmful interactions. Authorities have opted against a platform ban, instead pushing for concrete, measurable safeguards under a collaborative approach.

There are two new account types designed to segment the platform by age. As outlined in the joint statement, Roblox will automatically assign younger users into tiered environments with built-in restrictions:

“Roblox has today announced new account types, Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, designed to provide age-checked kids and younger teens with age-appropriate content and features… The age-check system will automatically place children younger than 9 in a Roblox Kids account and users aged 9–15 in a Roblox Select account.”

“Roblox Kids,” for users aged 5 to 8, will be limited to the most age-appropriate experiences, with chat features turned off by default. “Roblox Select,” for users aged 9 to 15, allows broader access but introduces tighter controls on communication—restricting interactions to filtered chat, same-age users, and pre-approved contacts.

Access to more advanced features will now depend on mandatory age verification. Users must confirm their age through facial estimation, ID submission, or parental verification before unlocking wider content and communication tools. Without this step, accounts remain restricted to limited experiences with no chat functionality.

The company emphasized that these changes are part of an ongoing rollout of stricter safeguards:

“With today’s announcement, the company will be requiring age-checks to access any games beyond those rated for our youngest users… Roblox is also expanding its parental controls that will allow Filipino parents to block specific games and manage all chat for children aged 9–15.”

Parental oversight is also being expanded, giving guardians more direct control over what children can access and how they interact on the platform—shifting more responsibility to the household level alongside platform moderation.

A key local addition is the integration of a dedicated reporting channel through Philippine authorities. Through the CICC’s Hotline 1326, users can now directly report harmful content, suspicious behavior, or potential grooming cases. This “green lane” is designed to fast-track serious concerns to law enforcement.

CICC Executive Director Renato Paraiso underscored the importance of this system:

“Because of the green lane that Roblox granted to the CICC and the PNP, parents and guardians can now report any Roblox concerns… particularly the cases involving harmful contents and encounters with threat actors within the platform.”

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda welcomed the rollout but stressed that implementation remains key:

“Roblox’s introduction of enhanced safety features is a welcome development… However, these measures must translate into real, measurable protection… Online safety… is a shared responsibility.”

The government also signaled that collaboration will continue beyond this rollout:

“In collaboration with the DICT, Roblox will continue implementing additional safeguards and measures to ensure the safety of minor and young users of the platform.”

The changes follow a series of meetings held in Manila around April 7, along with a parental awareness campaign launched on April 12. Full global rollout of the new account systems is expected by early June 2026.
