Bitcoin (BTC) had minimal value in May 2010, and coins were considered almost worthless. Programmer Laszlo Hanyecz made history on May 18, 2010, by proposing a trade of 10,000 BTC for pizzas, marking the inaugural commercial transaction using bitcoin. Although Hanyecz initially made the offer on May 18, it took until May 22 for someone to accept it.
At today's Bitcoin exchange rates, the funds Hanyecz used to buy two pizzas would be valued at $670 million. In a post made 21 days after the transaction, the programmer expressed an open offer to trade 10,000 BTC for 2 pizzas at any time, as long as he had the funds available. The pizzas were purchased from the Papa John's pizza chain, and the company acknowledged the transaction in 2021 on X.
